Aug 9, 2021Abstract The expansion phenomenon, which is a major issue when using steelmaking slag as a roadbed material and civil engineering material, is caused by the volume expansion during hydration of free CaO (undissolved CaO and precipitated CaO) and free MgO (undissolved MgO and precipitated MgO) contained in steelmaking slag. From the weight change of MgO reagent hydrated in distilled water, it ...

Aug 10, 2021the steelmaking industry contributes significantly to the world's industrial economy, with a total estimated worth of $900 billion per year. 1 materials used in almost everything today either come from steel or are manufactured using steel equipment. 1 in developing countries, there is an increasing demand for steel production for …
melt-in. The partition of phosphorus in the slag to phosphorus in the bath ranges from 5 to 15. Usually the phosphorus is reduced by 20 to 50 % in the EAF. Sulfur is removed mainly as a sulfide dissolved in the slag. The sulfur partition between the slag and metal is dependent on slag chemistry and is favored at low steel oxidation levels.
The slag is retained in the converter and subsequently re-utilised. The largest converter vessels worldwide currently contain up to 400 tonnes of crude steel. In addition to the pure oxygen top-blowing process (LD converters), converters with blowing from below (OBM converters) or with combined blowing from above and below (K-OBM converters) are also used nowadays.
During steelmaking process, the viscosity of the slag varies with the temperature and slag compositions. To some extent, the variation of slag viscosity can be one or two order of magnitudes [ 23 ]. In this context, the gas-slag-metal interaction with varying slag viscosities was numerically investigated.
Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg t −1 steel to 60 kg t −1 steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertiliser. This development is of particular significance since the supply of low-phosphorous iron ores ...
Steelmaking plants continuously strive to reduce the environmental load in the steelmaking process, resulting in the recycling of energy, water, and other byproducts. In this chapter, techniques for the treatment and recycling of metallurgical slags are described. Metallurgical slags are considered secondary raw materials and are used or added during the process to improve steelmaking practice.

In an effort to identify cost-efficient oxygen carriers for chemical-looping and OCAC technologies and to increase their circularity, BOF slag, which is an abundant byproduct of the steelmaking industry, has recently been investigated as an oxygen carrier [ 25, 26, 27 ].

Statistic parameters of iron concentrations in slag samples from several steelmaking plants are presented in Table 4. The data in Table 4 show that on average, iron concentrations in raw steelmaking slag samples are around 23%. However, the iron content in steelmaking slags varies greatly, from under 10% to over 35%.

Risk assessment. Workplaces, processes and products are different. To help you decide what - if any - protective clothing to provide you need to assess the risks from any work with molten metal. First you should ensure that all the other necessary controls are in place, consider how effective they are in preventing injury from molten metal and ...

with the potential health risk of workers, should be assessed using qualitative or quantitative approaches. In addition, the risk level of workers exposed to ultrafine particles from the blast furnace process in the steelmaking industry has been rarely reported. Aug 6, 2021Steel slag is a major waste product of the steelmaking process. Owing to its chemical composition, it can be reused as a raw material in steel mills and a substitute for aggregates in engineering. In 2022, the Republic of Korea (ROK) introduced the Environmental Assessment of Recycling (EAoR) system for the safe recycling of waste products, which divides recycling methods into either matrix ...
A mineral carbonation method based on steelmaking slags and ammonium salt solutions has been found to have economical and CO2 emission reduction potential. Although the aqueous solution of ammonium salt can be recycled, some of the solvent is likely to escape in a form of ammonia vapor within the outgoing gas flow during the carbonation step. In this study, the escape of ammonia vapor was ...
an important role in the watertightness and durability of concrete structures. Current models of wick action are based on an equilibrium developing between the rate of water entering concrete by sorptivity and leaving by water vapour diffusion where initial moisture content should not change the steady state rate, only the dominant factor in the early stages.
Only an in situ measurement of each slag pot can deliver results for each slag tapped. For this purpose a LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) system seems to be most suitable. The annual amount of LD-slag produced at Voestalpine Stahl (Linz) is 646,000t. Approximately 75% of this slag is used in bituminous road construction, about 12% ...
However, ferrous slag and slag-based products increasingly face difficulties in being accepted in public tenders. Secondary construction materials are - unlike virgin materials - reportedly forbidden in public tenders due to the burden of undertaking the environmental assessments that tenderers would otherwise have to carry out.
